Development of Suriname’s Safeguards Information System (SIS) for REDD+

As one of the last steps in REDD+ readiness under the UNFCCC, Suriname needs to prepare a Safeguards Information System (SIS). AAE is working to develop this in consortium with Tropenbos Suriname, UN Environment WCMC and Adept.

Main Tasks
  • Stakeholder engagement: two national workshops, SIS training and consultation of all ten Indigenous and Tribal Peoples communities in the interior;
  • Interpretation of safeguards in national context;
  • Identification of SIS objectives and functions;
  • Legal analysis of existing Policies, Laws and Regulations (PLRs) against safeguards requirements of UNFCCC and UNDP;
  • Identification of suitable information and indicators;
  • Development and population of SIS portal.
  • Creation of framework for generation of Summary of Information (SoI).

  • SIS report.

The AAE team is composed of experts on REDD+, forestry, land tenure and legal frameworks and environmental and social safeguards. Tropenbos Suriname contributed with experts on stakeholder engagement. UN Environment WCMC provided general expertise on SIS development and Adept is responsible for development of the web portal.
