The conservation and good management of forests is a key element in the fight to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. Every year forests are responsible for removing more than a quarter of all CO2 emissions. Moreover, they store more carbon, which could be released if they are destroyed, than existing and readily exploitable fossil reserves.
Efforts are ongoing to highlight and reinforce the importance of forests in the global fight to limit global warming. The Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, the Conservation of Forest Carbon Stocks, the Sustainable Management of Forests and the Enhancement of Forest Carbon Stocks (REDD+) is a key element in those efforts. REDD+ represents an opportunity for large scale mitigation that, together with other natural climate solutions, can contribute up to 20% of cost effective mitigation. Moreover, REDD+ can do so while providing substantial social and environmental co-benefits.
The preparation for REDD+ and its implementation is as promising as challenging. In AAE we have a broad group of experts from disciplines that include legal issues (related to land and carbon rights, transaction mechanisms, etc.), forestry, participatory process, finance, biodiversity and others. This has allowed us to construct tailor made teams that work closely together and with national counterparts from our government or private clients.
