Conservation International is working on the development of public and private partnerships for climate change adaptation and mitigation through the protection of mangroves and wetlands in the coast of Ecuador. Asesoramiento Ambiental Estratégico (AAE) in consortium with Centro Internacional para la Investigación del Fenómeno de El Niño (CIIFEN) are working on the project development to be presented to the Green Climate Fund.

Main Tasks
  • Adjusted workplan and Stakeholder Engagement Plan;
  • Mangrove Ecosystem baseline assessment;
  • Vulnerability Assessment for mangrove ecosystems;
  • Climate change gender sensitive adaptation actions of coastal communities;
  • Vulnerability assessment of existing policies and institutions;
  • An assessment of existing funding mechanisms in Ecuador;
  • Funding needs assessment for the Project’s key geographies;
  • Summary of the scoping and feasibility of identified funding opportunities and mechanisms;
  • Letters of Intent from government;
  • A stakeholder consultations report;
  • Development of project logical framework;
  • Gender Assessment and Gender Action Plan;
  • Relevant environmental and social safeguard plans;
  • Final funding proposal.
Main Outputs
  • Development of the baseline study on quantified carbon emissions, vulnerability and projected referenced climate change impacts;
  • Innovative finance mechanisms for mangrove conservation and feasibility studies;
  • Development of the GCF Funding full proposal for the project: Building resilient coastal communities and mitigating carbon emissions through public-private partnerships in mangrove and wetland restoration.

The AAE team was composed of associated experts on Climate Finance, Economics, Gender and Environmental and Social Safeguards.
